Large sites usually publish a sitemap index — a sitemap whose entries are other sitemaps. Paste either kind. If it is an index, its children are fetched and expanded so you get the page URLs rather than a list of more XML files to open by hand.
The noise filter, and why it is separate rather than silent
Most sitemaps carry URLs nobody wants in an index: cart and checkout, login and account pages, on-site search results, pagination, tag archives, RSS feeds and CMS internals.
Those are pulled into their own group with the reason each was matched, not deleted. A filter that quietly drops URLs is a filter you cannot check, and on some sites one of those patterns is real content.
What to do with the list
Copy it into a crawler, a spreadsheet, or a redirect audit. It is also the fastest way to see the actual shape of a site you have inherited — the section breakdown tends to surface entire content areas nobody mentioned.
Common questions
What is the difference between a sitemap index and a sitemap?
A sitemap lists pages. A sitemap index lists other sitemaps, and exists because a single sitemap file is capped at 50,000 URLs. This tool accepts either and expands an index one level down.
Why are some of my URLs in the filtered group?
They matched a pattern that is almost never worth indexing, such as a cart, login, search, pagination or feed URL. Each filtered entry is shown with the reason it matched, so you can judge whether that is right for your site.
Is there a limit on how many URLs it will return?
A sitemap index is expanded up to ten child sitemaps, which is enough for the great majority of sites. Very large sites may be reported partially rather than in full.
Can I paste a page URL instead of a sitemap URL?
No. This one needs to point directly at a sitemap file. If you do not know where yours is, the Sitemap Finder will locate it from a plain domain first.
