TeklDesk vs Intercom: do you need a support platform or an answer bot?
These two are not really the same category, and pretending otherwise would waste your time. Intercom is a customer-service platform: a helpdesk, a shared inbox for human agents, email and SMS and phone, outbound messaging, and Fin — their AI agent — sitting on top of it. TeklDesk puts a chat widget on your website that answers questions from your own pages and links back to the source, and it includes a support inbox for the tickets that follow, so your team can answer them without a separate helpdesk.
So the question is not which is better. It is whether you need a full omnichannel platform or an answer bot with a built-in inbox. If your process runs on assignments, routing rules and SLA timers, Intercom is built for that and we are not.
If you don't, the difference is stark: Intercom starts at $29 per seat per month with Fin billed at $0.99 per outcome on top, and TeklDesk starts free and then at $19/month flat with no seats and no per-answer charge.
No credit card required.

What the AI costs
- TeklDesk
- Nothing extra. Answers come out of your monthly message allowance, whichever model produced them
- Intercom
- Fin is billed at $0.99 per outcome on every plan, on top of the seat price. An 'outcome' is their unit, not ours — it is a resolution Fin is judged to have completed, so the two numbers are not directly comparable
Pricing model
- TeklDesk
- One account, no per-seat charge, a flat monthly message count
- Intercom
- Per seat, plus per-resolution usage on top
Time to live
- TeklDesk
- Paste a sitemap, wait for the crawl, add one script tag — about five minutes
- Intercom
- A platform to configure: workspace, inbox, teams, routing, then content for Fin
Answers from your own content, with sources
- TeklDesk
- Every answer links back to the pages it came from
- Intercom
- Fin answers from your content and cites sources
Refusing to guess
- TeklDesk
- A similarity threshold you set. Below it the model is never called and the visitor gets your fallback message
- Intercom
- Fin has guardrails and confidence controls, and can be told to hand off instead of answering
Human handoff
- TeklDesk
- Live on the website chat: a teammate takes over, replies in real time, assigns it and resolves it, with alerts by email, Telegram or Slack. No routing rules or SLAs, and not in Slack threads yet
- Intercom
- The core of the product — a shared inbox, agent assignment, routing rules and SLAs
Channels
- TeklDesk
- The widget on your website, and nothing else
- Intercom
- Website, email, SMS, phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger
Ticketing and helpdesk
- TeklDesk
- Inbox and board views, a status and priority workflow, canned replies, internal notes, threaded email replies with delivery status, and an audit trail in every ticket, included on every plan
- Intercom
- Full ticketing, macros, workflows, reporting and team management
Canned replies and macros
- TeklDesk
- Shared and personal canned replies, inserted with / in the reply box, with placeholders for the customer's name and ticket details; a reply can also set status and priority
- Intercom
- Macros and saved replies, plus workflows that run on a ticket automatically
Integrations and enterprise controls
- TeklDesk
- Script tag and dashboard, Slack on paid plans, with alerts by email, Telegram or Slack. No CRM or helpdesk connectors, no SSO, no audit logs. The ticketing is built in, not connected to another helpdesk
- Intercom
- A large app directory, CRM and commerce connectors, an API, SSO, audit logs, and a support agreement
Track record
- TeklDesk
- A newer product. Our security page lists what we have not yet done, including SOC 2 and a third-party penetration test
- Intercom
- Well over a decade in the market, with a mature compliance programme
Where TeklDesk wins
No seats, and no charge per answer
Intercom's bill has two moving parts: how many people are on it, and how much work Fin did. TeklDesk has neither. One account, one flat monthly number, and the number on the pricing page is the number you pay.
You can start for nothing
There is no free Intercom plan — the trial runs fourteen days and then stops. TeklDesk's free plan needs no card, runs indefinitely, and is the same crawler, retrieval and widget the paid tiers use with lower ceilings. You can leave it on a quiet site forever.
It is a smaller thing to set up
Intercom is a platform, and platforms need configuring — workspaces, teams, routing, inboxes — before the AI has anywhere to sit. If all you want is your website's questions answered, that is a lot of scaffolding for the answer. Here it is a sitemap and a script tag.
A flat price for the whole team
Three agents on Intercom's entry plan is $87 a month before Fin does any work. TeklDesk Pro is $59 a month with 15,000 messages included. The inbox, board and canned replies are included, so you are not paying per seat for the people who answer tickets.
Where Intercom wins
Anything involving a human
Live handoff, routing, SLAs, a shared inbox, agent performance reporting. This is most of what Intercom is. We have a built-in support inbox with a board, canned replies and email replies that thread back, and a website chat a teammate can take over live and assign, but no routing rules, SLAs or agent performance reporting. If real-time conversations need routing and reporting around them, we are the wrong tool.
Every channel that isn't your website
Email, SMS, phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger — Intercom unifies them. Our widget answers on your website and nowhere else.
Doing things, not just answering
Fin can take actions against connected systems — looking up an order, changing a subscription, triggering a workflow. We answer from indexed content and stop there.
The enterprise checklist
SSO, audit logs, role separation, SOC 2, a signed DPA, a named support contact. Intercom has all of it. Our security page is explicit that we do not have these yet, so if your procurement requires them, we are not the right fit today.
Bottom line
Choose TeklDesk if you want the questions your website already answers to be answered automatically, with a source link and a predictable flat bill, and a built-in inbox for the tickets that are left, without taking on a full omnichannel platform.
Choose Intercom if conversations need to reach humans, if you support customers on more channels than your website, or if you need the integrations and enterprise controls a support organisation is asked for.
